What is the difference between EPA and DHA?
Fish Oil supplements have earned their place in the daily routines of millions of Americans, even my own (even though I do not actually eat fish). This is because it has so many great health benefits! Everything from blood pressure and cardiovascular health to skin and mood disorders can be positively influenced by a daily dose. But not all fish oils are the same. Some contain more DHA than EPA or vice versa. It is important for those with specific needs to understand which of these may benefit them more significantly.
DHA omega-3 is naturally found throughout the body and is most abundant in the brain, eyes and heart, ensuring that all of these, as well as other parts of the nervous system function properly. So if your goal is treating mental acuity, focus, memory, the eyes, or cardiovascular health, choose a fish oil with a higher DHA.
EPA omega-3 is not naturally produced within the body and must be obtained through food and supplements. EPA is best known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and can be used to supplement treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, skin disorders such as eczema, acne, depression (due to its ability to fight neuro-inflammation in the brain), and has even shown beneficial in some cancer treatment programs. If inflammation of some type is your main concern, look for more EPA in your fish oil supplement.
