DIY natural insect repellent with essential oils
Did you know you can make your own insect repellent with just a few ingredients? Here’s the how-to on how to keep bugs away with wonderfully natural essential oils.
First, choose which essential oil to use based on the insect you want to target the most.
To repel mosquitoes, choose citronella, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium, or lavender oil.
For fleas, choose cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, lavender, orange, or pine oil.
To target ticks, choose rose geranium, juniper, rosewood, thyme, grapefruit, or oregano oil.
After choosing your essential oils, pick your favorite carrier oil to blend. Some of my favorites include jojoba oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil.
For oil-based bug repellent:
Mix 40-50 drops essential oil into 8 ounces of carrier oil.
For water-based bug repellent:
Mix 40-50 drops essential oil into 4 ounces witch hazel or rubbing alcohol, then mix with 3-4 ounces water.
You can spray or dab the solution on your skin but be careful to avoid sensitive areas, and don’t forget to re-apply every couple of hours
