When I first decided to start using Spirulina as part of my heath regimen I was a little concerned, I had heard about all the health benefits, but was a really ready to start eating algae? The first thoughts I had were of pond scum, and the next were about how awful this must taste! I was told that it came in capsule form which made me feel a little better but I wondered if it would be worth it in the end. After a little research I was convinced.
Spirulina is blue - green algae and is one of the oldest life forms on earth. And for all the science geeks out there: Spirulina cells contain no nucleus their cell walls are soft and this allows for very easy and complete digestion of the nutrients found in them. Centuries ago the Mayans and Aztecs consumed Spirulina and actually traded it as a prize possession.
Spirulina is an amazing super food with over 100 nutrients, and has been studied extensively for its health benefits such as it ability to support cardiovascular, eye, and brain health not to mention the boost for immunity and energy!

Polysaccharides: may help with cardiovascular health and normal cholesterol levels
Phycocyanin: the “blue” in blue-green algae that boosts the immune system
SOD: the enzyme that repairs cells

I had to tell myself I need to be taking this supplement; it started with the first protein shake of the morning. My husband whipped it up and brought it over to me, what flavor is it? I said. Peanut Butter, he smiled. OK, so it tastes like peanut butter, but it’s green! And so are the peach shake and the berry shake and the vanilla shake and all the other shakes...
We now just make jokes about what flavor the shake is today...but that is fine with me, I feel better and my energy levels are better and I am confident that my immune system is bad ass!
I have found that the most efficient way to get my Spirulina is in the powder form since too many pills just make me cringe, that is just a personal choice. You can get creative, there are many ways to get your daily dose of Spirulina I even hear they are making pancakes with it hummm.....green pancakes, reminds me of a Dr. Seuss book!
