This is a very common question that we hear all the time. Usually followed or prefaced by “What is Yoga?” So I thought I would share some information on yoga to give you a better understanding of it and explain some of the benefits of practicing yoga.
yo·ga [yoh-guh] –noun 1.any of the methods or disciplines prescribed, esp. a series of postures and breathing exercises practiced to achieve control of the body and mind, tranquility, etc. (definition from dictionary.com)
Yoga offers something for every fitness level, from the absolute beginner to the trained athlete. Each pose is preformed to the best of YOUR ability, no one else’s. With modifications to the poses, anyone can do it!
Yoga has numerous health benefits, physical and mental. On the physical side yoga can increase bone density, strengthen muscle tissue, improve flexibility & balance, bolster the immune system, and more! On the mental side yoga can decrease stress & improve mental clarity by de-cluttering the mind, just to name a couple.
One of the big advantages of yoga, as a form of exercise, is the ability to do it in almost any environment. And as you delve further into it you’ll discover there are many different disciplines and styles. It also is a very “affordable” form of exercise. You can do it at home with a video or follow along on your TV, download an easy to follow routine off the internet (most even have illustration on proper technique), or join one of the many yoga sessions offered at local studios, fitness centers, or YMCAs.
